introduction
In Summer 2023, twelve students from CCA traveled to South Korea to learn about graphic design in Seoul.
As one of the technology, fashion, and entertainment capitals of the world, Seoul also supports an experimental local design scene—one informed by the global exchange of ideas resulting from Korean designers going abroad and filtering Dutch, American, and Japanese design influences into their own sui generis approach to design—with a vibrant and ascendent design culture where uniquely ahistorical works are being produced.

Becoming immersed in Seoul’s local design scene through workshops with practicing designers, studio visits, and cultural site visits, the students gained a unique insider’s view and uncommon access to this innovative design culture. Students learn about the broad Korean art and design when visiting cultural sites like museums and bookstores, while studio visits help gain a better understanding of the historical context and dynamic atmosphere that frames the Graphic Design practice in Seoul, South Korea today.

CCA students had the opportunity to interact with Korean students, professors, and designers through this program’s partnership with Seoul National University, where some of the workshops and activities took place at.

A special thanks goes to the two professors, Chris Hamamoto & Sara Raffo, for organizing and facilitating this summer abroad trip. Shout out especially to Chris for contacting all the designers and the amazing hospitality at SNU!

Every student designed their own personal spreads. Grace Cao and I put together the book design.
Each student was tasked with designing 8 personal pages (4 spreads) documenting their experience with the study abroad program.

After the program ended, Sara Raffo asked Grace Cao and I to design the Atlas book including all of the student pages. Together, we laid out the book map for the order and structure of the pages and brainstormed concepts.

I led the final art direction and designed the book cover and chapter openers with the student names. Grace worked on the interior pages for the front and back matter.

Lost & Found
For my personal pages, I decided to focus on recovering lost memories attached to found objects around Seoul during the 3-week study abroad program. I created a collage of various categories of my photos and journaled notes about each photo.
